I privilege the imagination through a play with words to look at what writing is and what it can become, to create exciting and original poetry and prose works. The hybrid nature of contemporary writing incorporates such narrative possibilities as text messaging, email, found writing, audio and visuals as well – see Steve Tomasula’s Toc: A New Media Novel. Furthermore, hypertext link allows us to access the text from a non-linear vantage point which inevitably affects the way we read and consume our stories. As well as unpacking the more formal aspects of writing such as character, setting, dialogue and plot, in my workshops I explore notions of the ‘self’ to incorporate writing that acknowledges difference and identity: see Paul Beatty’s The Sellout, and Andrea Lawlor’s Paul Takes the Form of a Mortal Girl.
